Reporter Mark Robage of The Troy Record stopped by last week to learn more about Unity House’s Adopt a Child Program. The program serves over 1,000 children each year. Targeted to families in need, most of them already consumers of Unity House programs and services, the Adopt a Child program connects children’s individual Wish Lists with donors who want to help brighten the holiday for a family in need. For many families, their holiday would be a struggle without help.
Unity House’s program is unique in that parents are also offered a chance to shop at a ‘store’ where parents have the dignity of picking out a toy for their child. A parent knows their child best and can best pick out what their child might need and want for a gift. Unwrapped gifts donated by individuals and groups are set up in store-like setting where parents peruse gifts with the help of a staff member or volunteer. In this way, toys and games are not misrouted and children get a gift they really want or need.
For those interested in getting involved in the Adopt a Child program- either to ‘adopt’ a child, host a toy drive or to volunteer your time- contact Mandy at Unity House: (518) 274-2607, ext. 4139.
